Episode 15: Do You Actually Need Mobility Training?

2 min read

Everyone agrees on strength training, steps and cardio. Mobility is the quality that gets left out - and in Rich's view, the one most people only notice when they start losing it.

Hiro turns the tables this week and puts the questions to Rich: what mobility actually is, how it differs from flexibility, and what to do about it.

In this episode:

  • Why mobility gets overlooked: no instant dopamine, no PB to chase, and most people file it under "stretching"

  • What mobility actually is - flexibility, strength, balance and active control through a full range of motion, with no compensation

  • The practical tests: a deep squat you can come out of cleanly, hinging without rounding your spine, arms overhead without arching your lower back, getting off the floor without using your hands

  • Mobility vs flexibility, cleared up: flexibility is passively lengthening a muscle, mobility is moving through range under control. Do mobility work and you get flexibility work with it

  • Why fit, strong people can still have poor ankles, tight hips and limited shoulders - and why three to five gym sessions, a 5K and 10,000 steps don't prove you move well

  • Hiro on the hypermobile end of the scale: naturally flexible people often lack the stability and strength to control it. Train what you're not naturally good at

  • The payoff: more available strength, better expression of whatever training you enjoy, and less injury risk - compensation is what puts you in a vulnerable position over time

  • What to actually do: train mobility deliberately, 15-20 minutes daily if you can, or 45-60 minutes two to three times a week. A couple of minutes at either end of a session won't do it

  • Rich's five: mobility as the foundation, then everyday movement, strength, power for when you trip or react, and exploring movements beyond the machines

The takeaway: don't just train the muscles you can see. Train the movement you want to keep.
