Episode 2: The 5 Biggest Fitness Mistakes in Midlife

2 min read

You're training harder than ever and eating well — so why isn't your body responding? In this episode, Richard and Hiro unpack the five mistakes quietly sabotaging health and fitness in your 40s and 50s, and give you a practical fix for each. Decades of real-world coaching between them — advice built on what actually works, not theory.

The five mistakes (and how to fix them):

  1. No structure — Random workouts, no plan, no measurable goals. Fix: set clear SMART goals and build your training around them. Fail to plan, plan to fail.

  2. Training like you're 25 — Ego lifting and too much intensity brings aches, plateaus and injury. Fix: train smart, not hard — balance intensity with real recovery.

  3. The all-or-nothing mindset — On it Monday to Friday, off it all weekend ("weekend jet lag"). The start-stop pendulum kills long-term progress. Fix: aim for good enough, most of the time. Consistency over perfection.

  4. Nutrition confusion — You can't out-train a bad diet, and most people don't eat enough of the right food. Fix: three quality home-cooked meals a day, built around good protein and fibre.

  5. Underrating sleep — The most underrated pillar of all — and it's free. Fix: treat sleep like part of your training. Good sleep hygiene, same bedtime and wake time every day.

The two that do the most damage: training too hard (#2) and not respecting sleep (#5). If you only fix one thing this week, both hosts agree — start with sleep.
